President Trump maintains his lead as the favorite at (+150) to win the presidency again in 2020, but due to the way betting odds for futures work, predicting the chances of a candidate almost two years ahead of time with pinpoint accuracy is near impossible.
Basically, Trump has the highest chance of winning in 2020 currently because of one reason: He is the president.
A lot can happen in two years, and you only need to look back at 2016, two years ago, for evidence to back up that not-so-bold claim. Additionally, only Elizabeth Warren has officially announced her candidacy so far, and the odds will dramatically shift as announcements and debates get underway.
Beto O’Rourke, former U.S. Representative for the 16th district of Texas and Senator Kamala Harris from California are tied at (+1000).
Sen. Harris was the front-runner for most of 2018 and polls extremely well across all groups in the Democratic Party. She is now joined by Beto, who narrowly lost Texas Senate race to incumbent Ted Cruz during the midterms and made headlines by raising $80.1 million in individual donations – the most ever in a race for senator.
Independent Senator Bernie Sanders from Vermont comes in at (+1400) and has been a strong presidential candidate since finishing in second place for Democratic nomination in 2016.
Tied with Sen. Sanders is Joe Biden, who served as Vice President for eight years under President Barack Obama and said he will announce his decision on whether to run for president early in 2019.
Narrowly behind at (+1500) is Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and she announced her candidacy on New Year’s Eve, becoming the first major candidate to officially announce a presidential run.
Sitting at (+2000) is Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey, who is the first African American senator elected from the state and is expected to take a serious look at possibly running, and Vice President Mike Pence, who likely wouldn’t run unless President Trump did not run for re-election.
Vice President Pence is the only Republican apart from Trump that appears in the top ten.
Finally, 2016 Democratic nominee and former New York Senator Hillary Clinton and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, who currently holds the seat from New York, round out the top ten list to start 2019 and currently are given (+3000) odds. Both Clinton and Gillibrand have had rumors of running floating about, but nothing for either is concrete yet.
The first votes during the primary election at the Iowa caucuses are still 13 months away, but as 2019 marches on, expect to see most if not all the candidates on this list throw their hat in the ring and launch their campaign win the 2020 Presidential Election.
